Former Team India captain Sourav Ganguly stated Rohit Sharma's retirement decision from Test cricket was the correct one. The 38-year-old on May 07 took to Instagram story to announce his retirement from the red-ball format ahead of India's five-match Test tour of England. While some of the experts felt the opening batter should have stayed on and led the team, others thought it was a spot-on decision in hindsight as his form had massively dipped in the red-ball cricket.
The right-hand batter averaged a dismal 10.5 in the two home Test series against Bangladesh and New Zealand in 2024. Later, the veteran batter averaged a shambolic 6.25 in the five innings Down Under against Australia. From a Test career average of 45.46, the 38-year-old ended his career average on 40.58.

Speaking to India Today, Ganguly was asked about Rohit Sharma's decision to retire from Test cricket.
The southpaw said, "Retirement is everyone's individual decision, and I feel it's the right time for him to retire. He has played a lot of cricket for India and achieved a lot of things. He was an incredible captain, and that's why he was India's captain. It's been an extremely successful career, and he should be extremely proud of it."

Rohit Sharma to continue playing ODIs
Interestingly, it is the second format Rohit Sharma has called it quits after retirement from T20Is. However, the 38-year-old will continue to play ODIs for India. He is yet to win an ODI World Cup and is aiming to give it his all in the format, where he came agonizingly close to lifting the silverware in the ODI World Cup 2023.Â
